Carl von Linné (Linnćus) 1707-1778 botanist and physician at the university of Uppsala, made his first travel in 1741 to Gotland on Royal command.
His mission was to find plants for dyeing, clay for producing china and make an inventory of plants and objects för use in pharmacies.
One of his conclusions was: Gotland has an excellent climate for the cultivation of mustard and pressing the seeds to oil. A good complement to farmers ordinary produces.
Whether the farmers followed his advice is not known, perhaps they found the cultivation too trickey. Which indeed it is, but well worth the effort.
Please note that the mustard seed oil can be heated
to a maximum of 180° C only.
